This is all seductive black fruit and wood smoke. A touch of incense too, like a Christmas frankincense cone, plus sandalwood and cedar. There are beautiful, bright berry compote overtones that stop the rich fruit core from taking over the show, with a light lacing of liquorice and maple smoked bacon emerging on the finish. Smoky on the mid-palate, which is surprisingly lifted – although not to the detriment of the intensity. In a nutshell, this is absolutely delicious.

Since 1997, the estate has been owned and run by Batrice and Christophe Muret and on their watch quality, rather than quantity, has been the focus. With a strong focus on organic farming and environmentally sustainable practices, the Murets have struck an admirable balance between. Its one of the hardest things in the wine profession to find is very good inexpensive juice, particularly from Europe. But Domaine de Castelnau/Laurence de Veyrac proves that it is possible.
