From 20-30 year old vineyards around Laguardia, at roughly 450 to 700m of altitude, this village Rioja is a beautiful example. Maximum respect for the land and vines has been taken by Artadi, which allows the terroir of the vineyards to shine through. Ageing is done in 2 year-old French oak barrel.
PRESS: 91+ POINTS, WINE ADVOCATE:
The red (as there used to be a white, too) 2014 Vias de Gan has been updated with many of the (Tempranillo) grapes that were previously destined to the Pagos Viejos. Part of the grapes fermented in oak vats, part in stainless steel, and matured for one year in second use French oak barrels. There is more depth and more nuance here, following the modern, clean and focused house profile, with some spice but quite transparent. The palate is quite harmonious, with good weight, but still very drinkable, with round tannins and good overall balance. Good value and very “Rioja.” This wine, as all of the 2014s, will be sold without the Rioja appellation. Some 115,000 bottles were produced.
