Jos Antonio is one of the winemakers who is leading a quality revolution in the Rias Baixas. Tric is out to prove that Albarino in the Rias Baixas is capable of achieving the same mineral-inflected greatness as Austrian Riesling or Loire Chenin Blanc.

Based in the southernmost sub zone in Condado do Tea on the eastern side of the Mino River. The terroir allows plenty of sunlight and there is a pronounced thermal contrast between day and night which produces high-quality Albarino.

Albario is a native grape variety of Galicia most likelycoming from wild vines cultivatedby people from the region. The Mio River is considered to be the father of the Albario grape which has been growing in its banks ever since the Middle Ages.

Tricos Albarino grapes come from 10 hectares of estate only produced fruit with granitic soil. Their focus is in the vineyards based on the simplicity and keeping things as natural as possible. Enology on the field is Jos Antonios term to pay the most attention and the most precise care to allow them to obtain grapes so wine producing can be the least interventionist.

Nicolas de Trico is a single vineyard wine only produced in the bestyears andexpresses thepotential of the Albarino grape. Its name is dedicated to the first male grandchild of Jos Antonio and the date of birth of Nicols coincides with the first vintage of the brand.

  • 93 POINTS, WINE ADVOCATE:
There is a lot of power in the 2015 Nicols, more ripeness and mellow acidity. All the wines are produced in a similar way, pressing the clusters, letting the juice settle before being fermented at controlled temperature and using some neutral yeast for the end of the fermentation. None of the wines see any wood but are kept in tank for around one year before bottling. These are long-lived Albarios, very different from the commercial stuff released a few months after the harvest; they are a lot more serious and given time to settle in bottle before they are released. This is quite round and feels polished, a spherical Albario with hints of moss and wet stones and a bitter twist in the finish. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2017.
