The Zrate winery has been producing albarios since the early eighteenth, which makes it one of the historic wineries in this region. El Palomar is a single variety of Albario from vines planted in one of the oldest estates documented in the Rias Baixas, the vines being 150 years old and planted on very shallow granitic soil.
The wine itself has a bright golden yellow color. The nose opens with intense aromas of white-fleshed fruit, followed by mineral notes and spicy nuances due to the aging in wood. In the mouth it is fresh, with a marked flavor, a balanced structure and a long finish that highlights the characteristic minerality of the terroir.
Bodega Zrate use environmentally friendly techniques, without the use of herbicides. The harvest is done manually and grape selection takes place in the vineyard. Once destemmed, the grapes are lightly pressed. Zrate El Palomar is fermented in French oak barrels of 2,200 litres over eight years. The liquid remains with its residue until after malolactic fermentation, which develops naturally. Once completed, it is racked and remains in contact with its lees for three months until bottling. Zrate El Palomar spends 2 months in the bottle before going to market. It can be consumed immediately, although it will evolve favourably over the next 5-10 years in optimum conditons. Due to low production, only 2500 bottles are produced.
